This intimate, yet informal safari camp is nestled on a small island close to the south-western edge of Chief's Island, in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Botswana inland “sea”. Dotted in the forest Delta Camp’s lethaka (reed) chalets are designed to take advantage of the many indigenous trees of their island forest. Each chalet fits unobtrusively into its setting, blending into the surrounding bush while enjoying views over the flood-plains. Hammocks complete the picture of simple luxury in the wilderness. Delta Camp is on the banks of the Boro, one of the primary watercourses of the Okavango, and all chalets overlook the water.
Enjoy your meals in the elegant Dining Room overlooking the sweep of the Delta, or take a beautifully prepared picnic onto one of the many nearby islands for a secluded and intimate experience. The excellent meals ensure that guests are well prepared for their walks; tea and coffee are available at all times, and the open bar is on hand to refresh.
The Okavango Delta is a shifting web of crystal-clear channels, lagoons, sweeping floodplains and palm-studded islands. Game of all sorts is around - lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, hippopotamus, crocodile, giraffe, and a number of species of antelope including the rare lechwe, and sitatunga. There are also otter, honey-badger, and some of the smaller wild cats amongst the many mammal species you may see. Additionally, over 450 species of birds bring the Okavango to life and bird-song heralds each dawn. the Okavango has indeed earned its reputation as one of the world's premier wilderness areas.
Delta Camp excursions - walking Safaris and mokoro (the traditional dug-out canoe) - are conducted in the renowned Moremi Game Reserve, with your own professional Guide, a man of the Delta, completely at one with his environment. The focus is on peace and tranquillity (stalking game on foot provides all the excitement one could wish for) and guests are actively encouraged to visit a local village, home to our guides, and to interact, should they wish to, with the people there.
Client Comments:
2 nights later we flew to Delta Camp, my favorite spot on the safari. They picked us up at the airstrip in a mokoro and poled us (about an hour) to camp. It was the most peaceful, serene experience imaginable. When we got to camp we were taken to our treehouse cabin. It was like being in a fairy tale. There were no generators (the camp is solar- powered), no motors, no man-made noise at all. We heard hippos, birds, frogs, and elephants shaking the trees. There were no game drives in trucks, just cruises in the mokoros and game walks. The only thing I didn't love was the bugs on the game walks. Our guide, Philemon, finally solved the problem by cutting sage switches for us to wave in front of our faces. He also took us to his village, where the local women all brought out their handmade baskets for us to buy. It was a bit awkward - they were all wonderful and we had a hard time choosing. We felt almost like we were judging a beauty contest. In retrospect, I wish we had bought more. They were the nicest souvenirs we saw on the trip.
I just can't say enough good things about Delta Camp. It's rustic - our treehouse was partially open the elements. We had a bird fly in about 5 AM and squawk loudly on top of our mosquito netting, and the elephants shaking the trees kept my husband awake, but I can't think of a better reason to wake up in the night.
